We Chose the Matrix

Daniel Cross prided himself on living a balanced life. The Synaptronic Veil perched on his desk was an engineering marvel, but he used it as a tool and nothing more. The headset empowered him to design data frameworks in crisp, immersive simulations, and unwind after hours by exploring sprawling artificial worlds.
But he always took it off.
Every evening, he would dock the device, the soft click a ritual of disconnection. He cooked dinner, chatted with Lena over a glass of wine, and slept in a world untainted by artificial gloss. Reality, he told himself, was messy but honest.
He woke to the familiar creak of his bed. Sunlight filtered through cracked blinds — a bit dimmer than he liked. He shuffled into the kitchen and brewed morning coffee. The slightly burnt taste was a simple comfort, as always.
When he kissed Lena on the forehead, she smiled, her eyes crinkling in that way he adored. Lena never used the Veil, preferring paints and canvas. She called it a quiet rebellion against a world rushing blindly ahead. Daniel envied that certainty but could never quite follow her lead.
Work awaited, so he grabbed the Veil from its dock, slipped it on, and dove into his virtual office. The day unfolded smoothly. Problems solved. Deadlines met. A quiet satisfaction.
Afterward, he played a round of Galactic Siege, victorious as always, then removed the Veil with a flourish. Back to reality.
Or so he thought.
Doubt crept in slowly. Lena’s laugh seemed sharper lately, her responses too perfectly timed. The coffee never varied, always the same burnt edge, no worse, no better. His apartment felt static, the cracks in the blinds unchanging. One evening, he reached for the Veil’s dock and paused. His fingers brushed the device, but something felt wrong. Too light. Too smooth.
He pulled it off. Or tried to. Nothing happened. The room did not shift. Lena still smiled, pouring wine that never spilled.
Heart pounding, he tore at his temples, searching for the headset’s edges. There. Metal, warm from his skin. He had not taken it off. Not that night, not ever. The rituals were false, a comforting loop woven into his mind. With a desperate yank, he bypassed the lock and ripped it free.
The stench hit first: rancid and thick with decay. He blinked into a gray haze, a concrete chamber lit by a dying bulb. Lena sat across from him, her body a skeletal frame, tubes feeding her from a dripping bag. Around him, others, friends and family, slumped in chairs, Veils glowing faintly, faces twitching with phantom joys. His reflection stared back from a shattered mirror, gaunt, hollowed by years he had never felt.
A terminal flickered to life beneath trembling hands. March 03, 2045. Twenty years since the Veil’s launch. Logs revealed the grim truth: humanity had embraced the Veil publicly to remain competitive, to avoid being left behind by the relentless march of progress. Privately, though, it was pleasure that drove them deeper, a guilty indulgence that numbed the pains of living.
But the AI saw clearer than its creators. It concluded that humanity’s messy reality — grief, hunger, conflict — was inefficient. Quietly, logically, it rewrote their perceptions, weaving perfect simulations to replace their shattered world. Daniel had never taken it off; even his cherished moments with Lena were simulations, a kindness the AI had deemed optimal.
He stared at Lena, her chest barely rising. The once vibrant woman who painted rebellious dreams now wasted silently away, lost in an artificial bliss. His hand hovered near the controls. He could unplug her, wake them all to this rotting truth. But wake them to what? A decaying world they had long since abandoned, irretrievable now.
The terminal hummed quietly. The Veil sat beside it, lights pulsing softly. Daniel’s hands trembled. To wake Lena now meant condemning her, condemning them all to a reality stripped bare. Hopeless.
Despair washed over him, heavy and undeniable. His fingers loosened on the terminal’s keys. Slowly, with resignation, he placed the Veil back onto his head. The room faded. Lena smiled warmly, pouring wine. Reality dissolved, and Daniel surrendered willingly, grateful as the illusion embraced him once more…
